Across cities in the United States and among communities connected to the Southern Cameroons diaspora, advocacy for international recognition of Ambazonia—the former British Southern Cameroons—is gaining momentum. At the forefront of these efforts is Friends of Ambazonia Incorporated, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization grounded in Christian faith and humanitarian advocacy, working to engage policymakers, faith leaders, and the public in support of self-governance and lasting peace for the region’s people.

Founded on principles of justice, peace, and humanitarian relief, Friends of Ambazonia Incorporated focuses on raising awareness of the prolonged crisis in the former British Southern Cameroons. Supporters cite decades of colonization, political marginalization, ongoing conflict, and widespread displacement as driving renewed calls for independence. Through public education, humanitarian outreach, and international engagement, the organization seeks U.S. support for Ambazonia’s right to self-determination and a peaceful transition to self-governance.

Christian communities in the United States and within the Southern Cameroonian diaspora have played a notable role in advancing the movement. Faith leaders and community representatives have brought their concerns directly to policymakers during organized advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill, framing recognition of Ambazonia as both a moral and humanitarian imperative.

“Our suffering must not go unnoticed. We are working through peaceful and diplomatic channels to amplify our cause,” said Dr. Emmanuel Nji Tita, president of Friends of Ambazonia Incorporated, during a recent advocacy event in Washington, D.C. He urged U.S. supporters to stand with a people whose democratic aspirations, advocates say, remain constrained. Supporters argue that recognition would align with American principles of freedom, human rights, religious liberty, and commercial diplomacy.

Faith-based organizations have further amplified the message through prayer vigils, church partnerships, and community forums, reflecting a broader trend of diaspora groups using religious networks to promote awareness, civic engagement, and foreign policy dialogue.

Beyond humanitarian and political considerations, supporters also highlight the potential economic benefits of an independent Ambazonia. They contend that self-governance could enable responsible economic development, strengthen commercial diplomacy, and create opportunities for strategic partnerships with the United States.

The former British Southern Cameroons is believed to contain diverse and underexplored mineral resources. Studies have identified deposits of bauxite, cobalt, gold, columbite-tantalite (coltan), iron ore, and minerals associated with rare earth elements—materials critical to renewable energy technologies and advanced electronics. While comprehensive geological surveys remain limited, advocates say the region’s resource potential could attract U.S. investment, generate employment, and support growth in mining, manufacturing, and export-oriented industries. Agriculture, tourism, and cultural industries are also cited as sectors with significant growth potential under stable governance.

Internationally, Ambazonia’s pursuit of recognition faces substantial challenges. While global actors have acknowledged ongoing atrocities, killings, and mass displacement in the Southern Cameroons, international responses have largely favored political reform over self-governance. Friends of Ambazonia Incorporated maintains that independence represents the most viable long-term solution to the crisis.

Southern Cameroons was a British Trust Territory administered separately from French Cameroon prior to independence. Its predominantly English-speaking population historically operated under British-derived legal, educational, and administrative systems—factors supporters cite in asserting the existence of a distinct people within a defined territory.

Despite continued international silence, Friends of Ambazonia Incorporated says it will persist in its advocacy, expressing confidence that self-determination is essential to achieving lasting peace, dignity, and opportunity for the people of Ambazonia.
